THE FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL

a) to advise the Minister on policy relating to technical and vocational education and training;

b) to prepare plans for technical and vocational education and training in accordance with national policies and economic needs;

c) to ensure that agreed plans for technical and vocational education and training are implemented;

d) to co-ordinate technical and vocational education and training at all levels of the educational system and industry;

e) to establish standards for technical and vocational education and training;

f) to establish training priorities, qualifications and accreditation;

g) to determine the facilities and resources required to ensure satisfactory standards of technical and vocational education and training and the welfare of students, trainees and staff of training institutions;

h) to make grants and loans for the support and provision of technical and vocational education and training; and

i) to carry out such other functions relating to technical and vocational education and training

OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THE SLCTVET/TVET UNIT

• Manages TVET in the school system

• Provides training and support to teachers

• Processes applications for permits to operate private educational institutions

• Facilitates Centre approval

• Acts as an agent in arranging training

• Facilitates external verification and assessment and certification of CVQ/NVQ in Dominica, Belize etc

• Interfaces with local, regional and international TVET organisations such as NSDC CARE, SALCC, ILO, CARICOM in matters regarding TVET

• Facilitates prior learning assessment and recognition

• Develops Standards

• Validates Standards

• Quality assures training and education at all levels within the formal and non-formal setting.
